Food Safety Alert: Contamination Concerns Involving Infant Formula

Mesa County Public Health has been made aware of a recall involving hypoallergenic infant formula powder, which was distributed nationwide. Consumers should check their pantries for any of the recalled items and throw them out. The food is being recalled due to a potential contamination of Cronobacter sakazakii.
Description of Recalled Products
- Nutramigen Powder in 12.6 and 19.8 oz containers.
- Manufactured in June 2023 and distributed primarily in June, July, and August of 2023.
- The products have a UPC Code of 300871239418 or 300871239456.
- The products have a “Use By Date” of “1 Jan 2025.”

What Should Consumers Do
- Check pantries for recalled products.
- Consumers should discard them.

Cronobacter Description
- Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe infections like sepsis or meningitis.
- Symptoms usually start with a fever and poor feeding, excessive crying, or very low energy.
- Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis can include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), and abnormal movements.
- The bacteria may also cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.
- If your infant shows any of these symptoms, see a doctor right away.
