Warrant Forgiveness Day 65 warrants cleared in Mesa County
Mesa County's first-ever Warrant Forgiveness Day, held on Oct. 19, 2024, marked a successful effort to clear outstanding warrants and resolve cases, providing a fresh start for many community members. A total of 65 warrants were canceled, and as promised — no arrests were made — allowing participants to address their legal matters without fear of being taken into custody.
The event, coordinated by the 21st Judicial District, the Mesa County District Attorney's Office, the Community Justice Services Department (CJSD), and the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, saw over 65 individuals participate, and 90 cases were addressed.
- Thirty-seven cases were resolved at the event, with 25 being sentenced to a community-based sentence and 12 dismissed.
- Fifty-three cases continued to a new court date.
"This initiative provided an important opportunity for individuals to address their outstanding warrants without the fear of immediate arrest," said County Court Judge Bruce Raaum of the 21st Judicial District. "The collaborative efforts of all involved made this event successful, and we were pleased with the turnout and the positive outcomes for those who participated."
Participants had the chance to resolve their cases or reset their court dates, providing them with a path to move forward.
"At least 65 individuals were able to clear their warrants and begin moving forward with their lives," Mesa County Criminal Justice Services Manager Matthew Schultheis said. "It was a day of true community service, and we are grateful for the partnerships that made this possible."
The event was a success both in terms of numbers and in terms of providing second chances.
