The first phase of the Coffman Road Project is complete
Coffman Road is fully open north of Whitewater, where our teams have been working since March 2025 to widen and replace the road. The road upgrade spans from slightly north of Hookless Boulevard to the Old Spanish Trail trailhead.
Though Coffman Road isn’t a high-volume road, the majority of its traffic consists of large trucks traveling to the landfill, gravel pits and construction yard in the project area. It was time to complete a long-term improvement to the road, given the mixture of high-volume truck use and the unforgiving soil in the area.
Coffman Road is now two feet wider on each side of the road throughout the project location to improve safety for drivers.
County Engineering staff and the project contractor used a full-depth reclamation for this enhancement, an alternative method to digging deep to replace the expansive soils. In this method, crews reclaimed the existing gravel and asphalt, adding cement and gravel on top, to save time and money.
We appreciate our community’s patience and understanding during the construction phase to ensure the safe and successful completion of the project. We are pleased with the improvements this project will bring to residents and road travelers.
Mesa County Engineering will soon begin to design the second phase of the Coffman Road Project.
