The Mesa County Regional Transportation Planning Office, in partnership with local government agencies, first responders, and community stakeholders, is excited to announce $196,000 in additional federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program. This funding, coupled with a $49,000 local match (from Mesa County, the City of Grand Junction, the City of Fruita, and the Town of Palisade), will total $245,000 and be used to begin implementation of the recently adopted Mesa County Safety Action Plan.

The grant will support three key initiatives:

  1. Speed Feedback Signage: Drivers can expect to see a combination of fixed and mobile speed feedback signs strategically distributed across Mesa County to encourage drivers to slow down and adhere to posted speed limits.
  2. Safety Messaging and Outreach Study: To help identify effective communication strategies and raise awareness about traffic safety issues, the Mesa County Regional Transportation Planning Office will conduct a comprehensive study to understand the best education methods and strategies tailored specifically for Mesa County travelers.
  3. Development of a High-Risk Network: Since there are fewer crashes in the rural areas of Mesa County, this funding will build upon existing data to predict at-risk facilities based on infrastructure and other systemic factors.

“We are grateful for the support of the federal government and our stakeholders in prioritizing road safety,” said Rachel Peterson of the Mesa County Regional Transportation Planning Office. “This new grant will help bring the Mesa County Safety Action Plan to life.”

In 2023, Mesa County was previously awarded another federal Safe Streets and Roads for All Action Plan grant of $260,000 to develop the Mesa County Safety Action Plan. The 2021 federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) established the new Safe Streets and Roads for All discretionary program, providing $5 billion in funds over 5 years. The Safe Streets and Roads for All grant funds are administered by the United States Department of Transportation.
