Sheriff’s Office briefs commissioners on license plate readers

During the Aug.18 administrative public hearing, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office briefed the commissioners and the public about its use of automated license plate readers, including cameras provided by Flock Safety.

Operations Division Chief Art Smith, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, explained how the cameras are used, what information they collect, and the office’s policies for accessing, retaining, and sharing the information. He also discussed privacy concerns and shared examples of how the technology has supported investigations. 

“As long as we are able, intent is simply to continue to use our technology responsibly, ethically, and within the confines of the law to solve crimes committed against citizens of Mesa County,” said Smith.

Commissioners heard the presentation and asked questions, and members of the public provided comments. The briefing was for informational purposes only, commissioners took no action.
