Know Before You Go: Free COVID-19 Test Kits Still Available

Mesa County is currently experiencing the peak of respiratory virus season. In the last week, 12 residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related hospitalizations to 158 since October 1, 2023. The community is encouraged to test for COVID-19 if they have symptoms. Free test kits are still available while supplies last.

Mesa County Public Health (MCPH) began giving away test kits to the community in February of 2022 during the second wave of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Since then MCPH has given away 42,172 tests.

“The state provided us with these tests, and our team worked through the logistics of distributing them to community members and organizations. We estimate this program has saved the community more than $400,000, which is incredible,” said Disease Surveillance Specialist Julie Hartshorn.

Each box contains two tests, and there is a limit of two boxes per person. The rapid tests are easy to use and take less than 30 minutes to learn the results.  

“Testing is important because you can learn quickly if you could spread COVID-19 to others, especially those most at risk for serious illness. Once you know, you can start the recommended isolation and if eligible, begin treatment,” said Hartshorn.

The tests are available for pickup inside the Health and Human Services Building during regular business hours while supplies last. The building is located at 510 29 ½ Road in Grand Junction. If you have questions, call the MCPH Info Line at 970-248-6900.
