August is Zero Fare for Better Air

Transit agencies throughout the state of Colorado are participating in a statewide initiative, Zero Fare For Better Air, We’ll Get You There. Through this program, transit agencies all over the state will be offering free fare throughout the summer months, in effort to reduce ground-level ozone by increasing the use of transit. Grand Valley Transit will offer free fare system wide throughout the month of August and the last week of July. Community members and visitors are encouraged to ride transit to help keep Colorado's air clean during the summer months when air pollution is at its highest. This effort is made possible by Colorado Senate Bill 22-180, the Ozone Season Transit Grant Program in partnership with the Colorado Energy Office. According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), approximately 85 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions that come from transportation are due to day-to-day commutes. Leaving the car at home, can save up to 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every day depending on the length of the trip. Taking Grand Valley Transit not only reduces the number of vehicles on the street, GVT has a low carbon footprint because all buses are fueled by Compressed Natural Gas. The CNG fuel is produced from human waste at the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Plant in Grand Junction, and Mesa County is proud to say the GVT buses are poo powered.
