Greenbelt project brings safer streets and sidewalks to Broadway Elementary area

After five months of construction, major safety and infrastructure improvements are complete on Greenbelt Drive and 22 ½ Road.

Mesa County, the City of Grand Junction and School District 51 worked together on the Greenbelt project, creating safer, more accessible routes for students, families and the surrounding community.

The project widened and resurfaced Greenbelt Drive, which was in poor road condition, and added sidewalks on both sides of the road. It added crosswalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian access to Broadway Elementary, and better drainage infrastructure to an area prone to flash flooding.

Crews installed approximately 450 feet of new storm drain pipe along 22 ½ Road and 475 feet along Greenbelt Drive, tying into the existing stormwater system. New curb and gutter systems, curb ramps, and valley pans were put in to improve accessibility and functionality at key points, such as Pine Terrace and Milena Way.

The project was finished at the beginning of September, coming in ahead of schedule and just under its $1 million budget.
