Mesa County Emergency Management works with partner agencies throughout Mesa County to prepare for disasters and emergencies.

It is also important for individuals, families, and businesses to prepare for these events.

Emergency Management Planning Steps. Mitigation (Public Education, Hazard Assessment, and Vulnerability Assessment), then Preparedness (Emergency Response Plans, Training & Exercises, and Sirens), then Response (Life Safety, Incident Stabilization, Property Preservation, Evacuation & Shelter, and Mass Care), and finally Recovery (Economic Recovery, Debris Management, Housing, and Health & Social Services).

Emergency alerts

Sign up for Emergency Alerts

Mesa County uses an Emergency Notification System to provide essential information quickly during an emergency.

Landlines are automatically signed up for the Emergency Notification System, but cell phone users must sign up.

To get alerts sent to your cell phone, sign up for the Emergency Notification System and Community Alerts system on the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center website.

Sign up for Emergency Alerts is below an emergency symbol. Get cellphone, email, and text message alerts for your home, work and child's school with icons for cell phone, email, text message and the Mesa County Sheriff's Office logo. All content is written in white and the background is red.

Emergency information

It is important to know how to get information before, during, and after an emergency. 

National alert systems that can be utilized locally in the event of an emergency:

  • Emergency Alert System (EAS).
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs).
  • Visit the Emergency Alerts page on the Ready.gov website to learn more.

Western Colorado 211 has a list of resources available.

  • Visit the WC211 website.
  • Call 211 to Speak with live, trained professionals to obtain information about services and alerts during an emergency or disaster.

Visit the COtrip system provided by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to find travel alerts and road conditions.

Visit the National Weather Service Radio Station provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with information about:

  • Official weather warnings
  • Watches
  • Forecasts
  • Hazard information

The Mesa County Community Wildfire Protection Plan, developed in 2023, was created to help you understand the wildfire risks your home and our community may face and how to prevent or minimize them. This plan was created by Mesa County, local stakeholders, and SWCA Environmental Consultants.

Mesa County Hazard Mitigation Plan

Purpose of the Plan: Reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards.

Mesa County originally completed its Hazard Mitigation Plan in 2005. The plan was subsequently updated in 2010  and 2015.
