Bond and Release Processing
What is a bond?
A Bond is a formal written agreement where a person agrees to do something (such as appear in court) or stop doing something (such as committing a crime). If the person doesn't comply with the agreement, the person and/or a surety (bondsman) forfeits the money paid for the Bond. The purpose of a Bond is to motivate the person to comply with the written agreement and to provide consequences if the person doesn't. In most cases, a surety (bondsman) is involved and the Bond makes the surety responsible for the consequences of the person's behavior.
An inmate’s bond will be determined during their first appearance before a judge. To find an inmate’s bond, please visit our Inmate Locator Page. An inmate’s bond will only appear on their profile AFTER they’ve seen a judge.

Types of Bond
Cash Bond
Cash bonds require the full amount of the bond be paid in cash or certified funds. Payment can only be made to the Records Unit of the Sheriff’s Office. The inmate will have to sign the bond form and will be given the return court date on the receipt. The payment may be returned once court appearances are completed. Returned bond money is only processed through the court.
Surety bond
This bond can be posted through a state-licensed bonding agent (bondsman). Bonding agents may require a co-signer and/or collateral to secure the bond and 10-15% of the total bond amount may be charged upfront.
Sheriff’s Office personnel cannot answer any questions regarding bonding agents or what they charge to post a bond.
Property bond
The equity in real property, such as an owned home, can be put up in lieu of a bond. This process must be completed at the 21st Judicial District / Mesa County Court Clerk’s Office located at the Mesa County Justice Center.
Personal recognizance bond (PR)
A personal recognizance bond (PR) requires no money. Should a judge grant a PR bond, the inmate/defendant is required to sign a promise to appear in court.
Personal recognizance cosign bond
This is a bond that an additional person must sign to show they will take responsibility for the bond amount should the inmate/defendant miss a court date. The co-signer must qualify at the 21st Judicial District / Mesa County Court Clerk’s Office located at the Mesa County Justice Center and bring that paperwork to the Sheriff’s Office before the bond can be signed.
This bond can also be posted by a bonding agent or paid in cash.
How can a bond be revoked?
The person who wants to revoke a bond is responsible for bringing the defendant into the Mesa County Detention Facility before the bond can be revoked. The defendant must be physically present in the secure area of the jail before a bond revocation can be signed and completed.
A bonding agent can walk a defendant into the release area of the jail and Booking personnel will process the bond revocation. All other individuals must bring the defendant to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Detention Lobby.
Sheriff’s Office personnel will provide a Bond Revocation Form to be filled out by the person who posted the bond while the defendant is remanded into custody.
